The writing of this book was stimulated by the radical reorientation of phonology that was initiated by the distribution of two manuscripts, Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky, 1993) and Prosodic Morphology (McCarthy and Prince, 1993a) in the spring of 1993, as well as by the notion of “domains” of High tone-spreading developed in Kisseberth (1994). The first draft was completed in the Fall of 1994. Various factors prevented me from immediately undertaking a final revision of that manuscript, and the emergence of “Correspondence Theory” in Optimality Theory in 1995 prompted a decision to totally rewrite the manuscript.
